Basilisco was founded in the 1990s, with the aim of achieving the highest quality both in the vineyards and in the wine. It was acquired 2011 by Feudi di San Gregorio, a leading winery in the South of Italy.

Basilisco’s vineyards are in the area of Barile, between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. Among them is “The Historical”, a beautiful old vineyard where vines grow on traditional “capanno” together with olive and fruit trees. The 20 hectares are completely organic and are overseen by Pierpaolo Sirch. The volcanic soil, tuff stone, and flysch enriches the full, fruity wines with unmistakable characteristics of freshness and minerality.

Basilisco vinifies and stores its wines inside caves dug beneath the village in the 15th century.

The 2016 Basilisco Crua Vulture Superiore Aglianico is a red wine originating from the Basilicata region of Italy, specifically the Aglianco del Vulture sub-region. Produced by Basilisco, this wine is made from the Aglianico varietal and has an alcohol content of 13.5%. It is sealed with a cork closure.

James Suckling awarded this wine a score of 93, describing it as "a fragrant, tangy red with aromas of currants, sour cherries, black truffle, orange zest, dried violets and wild herbs." He notes its medium-to-full body, creamy tannins, and bright acidity, concluding with a "delicious, juicy finish." It is also noted that the wine is made from organically grown grapes, making it a more eco-friendly choice for consumers. Suckling suggests drinking this wine now to enjoy its full range of flavors.

Wine Enthusiast's Alexander Peartree gave the wine a slightly higher score of 94. He highlights an "earthy, refined nose of condensed red cherry, cranberry, violet and truffle," and emphasizes the elegance on the palate. Peartree mentions the wine's "lifted elements of violet and crushed stone," which add power and poise to the rich berry fruit. He describes it as an "unforced expression that gives a real sense of place." Peartree recommends enjoying this wine through 2030, indicating its potential for aging.

Vinous reviewer Eric Guido also scored the wine 94+, noting that the 2016 Cruà "takes things to a more serious level," with aromas of "musky black currants, plums, flowery underbrush, wild scrub and herbs." Guido describes a complex palate with "saline-minerality," accented by brisk acids and tart wild berries, and a "wave of spicy citrus." He remarks on the wine's "push and pull of sweet-and-sour tension" and its long, savory finish with nuances of blackberry and tangerine. Guido highlights the wine's potential for future aging, suggesting that while it's enjoyable now, it has a very bright future ahead.

Overall, the 2016 Basilisco Crua Vulture Superiore Aglianico is highly regarded by reviewers for its aromatic complexity, balanced palate, and potential for aging. With scores ranging from 93 to 94+, it stands out as a noteworthy wine from the Aglianco del Vulture region, offering both immediate enjoyment and future potential.
