Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The 2019 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is an impressive proprietary blend from Tuscany, Italy, composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. This wine, produced by Fattoria Le Pupille, is characterized by its deep red color and is sealed with a traditional cork closure. The alcohol content is a robust 15%.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave the 2019 Saffredi a near-perfect score of 97 points, praising its "explosive" quality and "very compact and powerful quality of fruit with deep intensity, thick layering and a velvety texture." The reviewer pointed out the increased percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage, which contributes to its robust character. The wine is described as a "real beauty" that would benefit from further aging.

Wine Spectator also offered high praise with a score of 96 points. Their review highlighted the wine's "deep, polished" nature, noting aromas and flavors of "black currant, blackberry, plum, violet and oak spice" that mesh well with its dense structure. They recommend drinking it from 2024 through 2037.

Vinous echoed these sentiments, giving the wine 97 points and describing it as "one of the most elegant wines" tasted from the producer. Antonio Galloni noted its "beguiling mix of opulence in its fruit profile with a classic sense of structure," suggesting that it would benefit from a few years of aging to soften its imposing tannins.

Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine 95 points, capturing its "celebratory nose" and a palate that features "cherries, blackberries, vanilla, spice and leather," along with "candied orange peel and dark chocolate." The tightly wound tannins indicate that it will continue to develop well with age, recommending a drinking window from 2024 to 2037.
