94 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 1998

The best Lynch-Bages made during the sixties, its rich, cedary, massive aromas of black currants and leather are still present in plentiful amounts. Not terribly refined, but deep, powerful, concentrated, alcoholic, and extremely long on the palate, this huge wine has been at its apogee since the late seventies, but will hold for another 10 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 12/89.

95 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2000

Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish. There is no telling how much longer this 1961 will retain its magic, but it is still a classic. Anticipated maturity: now-2010.

About Winery

"The Lynch-Bages estate (90 hectares) is located just outside the city of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary, on one of the most beautiful gravelly outcrops in the appellation. The well-drained soil consists mainly of Garonne gravel. The sub-soil (marl, chalk, and thick clay-sand gravel, or hardpan) forms a solid, but fairly disjointed foundation, enabling the roots of old vines to grow to a depth of 6-8 metres."
