Last Tasted 7/94 This was a terrific showing for this wine that I thought had begun to drop some of its fruit five or six years ago. It again confirms that (1) a wine's balance, (2) the condition of the bottle when purchased, and (3) the subsequent storage conditions are the principal keys to a wine's ability to perform consistently well over a long period. This bottle, from a cold, damp cellar, was in super condition. The wine revealed a dark ruby/purple color with some amber at the edge. A big, spicy, coffee, herb, and curranty nose jumped from the glass. Supple, medium to full-bodied, with the elegance of a top Bordeaux, and the chewy, fat fruit of a California Cabernet, this complex, smooth-as-silk wine should be drunk up. If the wine was purchased in perfect health and has been stored in a cold cellar, there is no need to be alarmed about the condition of this wine.

One bottle was off, but the second revealed a rich core of supple, vibrant and complex Cabernet flavor that echoed currant, tar and tobacco notes before smoothing out on a long, full finish. Silky and elegant, it remains in excellent condition and has the potential to hold for a few more years with proper storage. Impressive youthful and intensely fruity; best bottle in a decade.--1974 California Cabernet horizontal. 100 cases made. –JL
