90 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2000

This is an elegant 1982, with blueberry, raspberry, mineral, and spicy oak aromas in the moderately intense, polite bouquet. The color is a healthy dark ruby with no lightening or amber. The wine exhibits firmness in the mouth as well as good flesh, a sweet, ripe entry, medium body, and impressive elegance and length. Not a blockbuster such as Gruaud-Larose, Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, this youthful, vibrant 1982 is a model of symmetry and finesse. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.

93 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2009

A strong effort for this estate, the 1982 exhibits sweet aromas of plums, licorice, earth, and flowers. The tannins are slightly rustic, but the sweetness of the fruit, the broad expansive mouthfeel, and the wineâ_Ts full maturity represent a classic Bordeaux at the top of its game. Enjoy it over the next 5-8 years.

88 points,

Wine Spectator, November 1998

A big, traditional-style red. Ruby-garnet in color, with chestnut, berry and truffle aromas. Full-bodied and very concentrated, with velvety tannins and lots of mushroom and earth flavors. Slightly dry.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now. –JS

About Winery

The long history of Chateau Branaire-Ducru coincides with that of the (usually gentlemanly) stuggle for power between the bourgeoisie and nobles for possession of land in the Médoc before the French Revolution.

Since 1988, Patrick Maroteaux and Philippe Dhalluin, respectively President and Managing Director of Branaire-Ducru, have been reviving the competition, and the wine media are sitting up and taking notice.

Branaire's many old vines and perfectly kept vineyards, some of which are newly planted, are decided strong points.

Philippe Dhalluin explains: "The very gravelly soil, as well as the high average age of the vines, account for Branaire-Ducru's low yields.

Care is taken to control the vigour of the young vines. Rather than resorting to thinning out, which we find somewhat brutal, we prefer to let grass grow between the rows in plots of young vines. This is an entirely natural way of limiting production. It also has the advantage of fighting drought conditions since vine roots must go deep down into the soil to find water, and are thus able to cope with long dry spells".
