One of the over-achievers of the vintage, Meyney's 1982 has taken on an opaque garnet color, and offers a flamboyant nose of licorice, Asian spices, smoked meats, leather (brett?), and jammy black-cherries. Full-bodied, with sweet, expansive fruit and a chewy texture that nearly conceals some formidable tannin, this wine has always been delicious, but it has taken on more structure over recent years. It is a juicy, well-delineated Meyney for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years. Tasted 7 times since bottling with consistent notes.

Fully mature, the 1982 Meyney is so concentrated, alcoholic, and thick that it will easily last for another two decades. The wine's color is a saturated, nearly opaque purple/garnet. The huge nose of melted road tar, black fruits, smoked meats, and herbs is penetrating and intense. Full-bodied, and almost too jammy and thick to drink without authoritatively flavored dishes to accompany it, this large-scaled wine lacks finesse, but compensates with its full-throttle power and presence. Drink it over the next 20 years. Last tasted, 2/93.

One of the most surprising results of the Philadelphia tasting was how spectacular the 1982 Meyney has turned out. I was enthusiastic about this wine when it was young, but I have not revisited it as frequently as others. It boasts a gorgeously perfumed, sweet nose of black fruits, damp earth, truffles, herbs, and toasty wood. Dense and full-bodied, with moderate tannin, fabulous concentration, an unctuous texture, and a low acid, thick, juicy finish, it should drink well for 10-15 years. An amazing accomplishment, it is one of the vintage's most noteworthy sleepers.

A burly, chewy red, as usual. Dark ruby-garnet in color. Red licorice and ripe berry aromas. Full-bodied, with a lot of fruit and raisin character. Full tannins and a long finish.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2000. (JS)

Wonderfully elegant and rich; a hedonistic wine, with berry and chocolate flavors and soft, silky tannins. Drink now.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. (JS)
