Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 1995

I certainly bungled the early reviews of this wine! In barrel and early in bottle, it was a big, ripe, fruit bowl of a wine with virtually no acidity or structure in evidence. However, it is safe to say the one component Bordeaux never lacks, even in the ripest, fattest vintages is tannin. As this wine has evolved it has become much more delineated as well as classically proportioned. In fact, it is an exceptional example of Pichon-Baron produced during a period when this estate was best known for the mediocrity of its wines. The 1982 reveals a dense, opaque ruby/purple/garnet color, and a huge nose of cedar, sweet cassis, and spice. The wine's full body, marvelous concentration, that 1982-like opulence and unctuosity, and a thick, jammy, moderately tannic, superb finish, all combine to offer a splendid drinking experience. Given its sweet, creamy personality, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 20 more years. Tasted 9 times since bottling with consistent notes since 1987.

About three years after the vintage I realized I had completely under-estimated this Pauillac. A superb Pichon-Longueville-Baron, as well as one of the vintage's great wines, it boasts a dense purple color with pink/orange hues at the rim. The super-expressive nose offers black currants, cedar, iron, and minerals. Rich, full-bodied, and just as dense and concentrated as Grand-Puy-Lacoste, but more complex, this is a spectacular effort. While the Philadelphia tasting was its finest showing to date, it has consistently rated 90-92 points over the last 7-8 years. It appears to be adding weight and becoming more delineated and complex aromatically. This stunning 1982 is undoubtedly under-priced at auctions. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.

($155) Full red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Aromas of plum syrup, redcurrant, cedar, minerals, coffee and earth, with a tight core of spice. Thick, sweet and plush, with lovely restrained sweetness and solid underlying minerality. As rich as this is, its firm spine of acidity and substantial ripe tannins should enable it to develop for at least another 10 to 15 years. My second bottle was more bound-up and muscular in style but very Pauillac and of roughly the same quality, with lovely acidity and grip. Now through 2020. 92(+?) points

Big surprise. Dark ruby, with a garnet rim. Cassis, berry, tobacco, cherry. Incredibly complex. Full-bodied, incredibly velvety, with masses of fruit, currant, berry, tobacco. Never that highly rated but seriously good. Drink now or hold.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. (JS)
