91 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 1995

Groth turned in a superb performance with its 1985 regular cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers beautiful, sweet, ripe, flashy, black-cherry and cassis fruit, toasty oak, and a subtle, herbaceous note. Rich, opulent, and fully mature, this velvety-textured, explosively fruity wine should be drunk over the next 5-10 years. Given the superb performances in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986, I wonder why Groth's Cabernets have become so herbaceous and vegetal in recent vintages since?

90 points,

Wine Spectator, January 2005

Lovely perfumed, floral and cherry-berry aromas belie its age. Supple and graceful, this is a delicate wine that has shed most of its tannins yet retained a tasty core of fruit. Best soon, as the plum, floral and berry flavors are tasty.--1985 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now. –JL

About Winery

In 1981, Dennis and Judy Groth purchased a 121 acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan from 1972-1974, in the heart of the Oakville appellation. It was prime Cabernet Sauvignon land, planted by masters. Some of the grapes found their way to Justin's Silver Oak bottlings and to other successful Napa Valley bottlings. The Groth wines have also been successful, as Robert Parker gave the 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon the distinction of being California's first 100 point wine.
