This wine has quickly reached full maturity. The color is a dark ruby/garnet with some amber at the edge. The nose offers up sweet, roasted-herb, caramel, plum, cassis, and black-cherry fruit aromas with a suggestion of grilled meats and animal fur. Round and velvety-textured, with more noticeable acidity than tannin, this wine lacks the power and richness to be great, but it is certainly delicious, already complex, in the elegant style of La Chapelle. Anticipated maturity: now-2005. Last tasted 11/96.

A saturated dark plum/garnet color with amber at the edge is followed by an attractive smoky, underbrush, and truffle-scented wine with coffee, smoke, cedar, and jammy cassis/plum-like fruit. As the wine sits in the glass, notes of Chinese black tea, pepper, and soy emerge. There is surprising tannin and austerity in the finish, but the aromatics and attack were convincingly rich and intense.

A pleasant, expressive Hermitage, showing a ripe character, with lovely plum, blackberry, lead pencil and leather notes. The tannins are well integrated but still firm. Long finish.--La Chapelle vertical. Drink now through 2007. (PM)
