The massive 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon-Howell Mountain is super-rich, extremely tannic, and very long. It needs at least 7-8 years to soften and should last for up to 20.

Full medium ruby. Blackberry, cassis, cracked pepper, minerals, maple syrup and tar on the nose. Smooth but powerful in the mouth, with dark berry and mineral flavors enlivened by excellent vinosity. A dense, highly aromatic wine with terrific verve. Finishes with powerful but sweet tannins and palate-staining dark berry flavors.

A powerful, young wine, even at age 10. Dark, ripe, intense and deeply concentrated, this one is years from peaking. Packed with a rich, earthy core of currant, mineral, anise, sage and cedar. Quite tannic in this tasting, the fruit poured through on the finish.--1987 California Cabernet horizontal. Best from 2000 through 2010. -JL
