The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. Although the 1988 received the highest marks of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages, it remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The 1988 is a great Rieussec. It is an utterly mind-blowing performance for the chateau, with a hauntingly perfect bouquet of honeyed fruit, vanillin, and spring flowers. The rich yet graceful flavors reveal great precision and persistence. The wine has remarkable clarity, stunning power and depth, and a finish that must last several minutes. It is a winemaking tour de force, and one of the greatest young Sauternes I have had the pleasure of tasting. Nearly impenetrable at present, the wine has closed down, as have many 1988s. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Last tasted, 6/93.

Deep, oaky aromas of honey, coconut, vanilla and creme brulee Sweet and plump in the mouth; the flavors of coconut and tropical fruit are initially dominated by spicy oak notes. Finishes with slight heat (the alcohol is a relatively high 14.7%) but also excellent persistence of flavor. This showed more development of flavor as it opened in the glass. 90 points

It was great we opened this wine and right away we could
smell it and it was awesome. In the glass the scents of orange, honey, vanilla
and coconut. Make such an awesome combination and the full body adds a great
balance to this wine.

About the Winery Rieussec
"Château Rieussec is one of the richest and most exotic of all Sauternes, producing particularly good wines in the late 1980s and the mid 1990s. Rieussec has been owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild since 1985 and is located at one of the highest points of Sauternes in the village of Fargues where its vineyards border those of Château d`Yquem.Rieussec's 75 hectares of vineyards are planted with 89% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Yields are low and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and oak casks before being matured in oak barriques (70% new) for 18-24 months. Rieussec produces a classic full-bodied Sauternes that is deep golden-yellow in colour and packed with lusciously sweet, honeyed fruits. Classsfied as a 1er Cru Classé, its best vintages rival those from d`Yquem."
