Reviews of 1988 Lynch Bages Bordeaux Blend

92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
June 2000
One of the big surprises is how delicious this wine has turned out. It is a beautiful, classic claret. Dark ruby-colored with purple hues, it reveals aromas of dried herbs, smoke, leather, grilled meats, and copious black cherry and currant fruit. Medium-bodied, powerful, rich, and surprisingly evolved, this vintage has hit its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 10-12 years.

Undoubtedly, the 1988 Lynch-Bages is the biggest wine produced in the northern Medoc in this vintage. The saturated black/ruby/purple color suggests excellent ripeness and plenty of concentration. The oaky bouquet exhibits roasted black raspberries and currants, as well as an earthy, robust character. The wine is full-bodied, rich, with an attractive cedary, herbaceous, black fruit character. This fleshy, broad-shouldered wine characterizes the style of the chateau. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted 1/93

The bouquet exhibits roasted black-raspberries and currants, as well as an earthy, robust character. Full-bodied and rich, with an attractive cedary, herbaceous, black fruit character, this fleshy, broad-shouldered wine characterizes the style of the chateau, and also avoids the harsh astringency that plagues many 1988s. Moreover, it remains a notable value. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 6/93.

A marvelous bottle of Lynch--better than the 1990 and just a notch below the 1989 in quality. Wondrous aromas of mint, berry and black currant follow through to the palate. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and a long, long finish. Beautiful.--1988 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2003.

About 1988 Lynch Bages Bordeaux Blend

About the Winery Lynch Bages
"The Lynch-Bages estate (90 hectares) is located just outside the city of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary, on one of the most beautiful gravelly outcrops in the appellation. The well-drained soil consists mainly of Garonne gravel. The sub-soil (marl, chalk, and thick clay-sand gravel, or hardpan) forms a solid, but fairly disjointed foundation, enabling the roots of old vines to grow to a depth of 6-8 metres." www.lynchbages.com/presentation.htm

About the Wine
"Almost opaque wine. An imposing concentration of ripe fruits mixed with smoky undertones. Firm tannins are hidden by the richness of the fruits and its balancing acidity. A powerful wine."
