1989 is one of Beaucastel's most successful vintages. Delicious young, it continues to age slowly as well as positively. The only problem has been reports about defective corks causing leakage (I bought several cases of this wine and have experienced no such problems).

The 1989 is inkier/purple in color than the 1990, with an extraordinarily sweet, rich personality offering up notes of smoke, melted licorice, black cherries, Asian spices, and cassis. Full-bodied and concentrated, it is one of the most powerful as well as highly extracted Beaucastels I have ever tasted. It requires another 3-4 years to reach its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for at least two decades. (Many purchasers have reported bottle leakage (due to a cork problem) with this vintage. I purchased two cases of this wine, but none of my bottles reveal any sign of leakage. A good friend of mine, Dr. Jay Miller, owner of Bin 604 Wine Sellers in Baltimore, has consistently had a problem with “corked” bottles of the 1989, but no leakage.)

The sumptuous 1989 possesses an intense black/ruby/purple color. The nose offers a veritable smorgasbord of jammy cassis, Provencal herbs, Asian spices, fruitcake, coffee, and hickory wood. The wine is sensationally concentrated and well balanced, with soft tannin and enough acidity to provide balance and freshness. Full-bodied, with layers of fruit and glycerin, it can be drunk now because of its lavish richness, yet it should age for 20 + more years. It should exceed the quality of the superb 1981. Last tasted 12/95.

Perhaps the greatest Beaucastel ever produced. Has the class and structure of a great vintage of Mouton-Rothschild. Deep, inky in color, with intense herb, plum, game and spice aromas, this full-bodied wine has an explosion of fruit and an iron backbone. Try the beginning of next century.--Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Best from 1995 through 2005. 25,000 cases made. (JS)

About Winery

Among the prominent people in the town of Courthezon during the sixteenth century was the Beaucastel family. In 1549, "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its land holdings, containing 25 saumées at Coudoulet". More than four centuries later, this remarkable domaine, known today at Château de Beaucastel, is producing what most people acknowledge to be the finest wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

"Beaucastel and its subsidiary wines marketed under the Perrin et Fils moniker are consistently among the bright shining stars of France. I have been visiting this estate for nearly thirty years, and over that time I have seen all the elements of what makes wines great - an incredible respect for the vineyards, a conscientious, uncompromising work ethic, and extraordinary passion for gentle handling of fruit from their sites." -Robert Parker
