Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 1993

Make no mistake about it, the 1989 Chasse-Spleen is the finest wine this property has produced since their great 1949. This is a spectacularly rich, powerful, authoritative example of the vintage that can compete with and even surpass many of the most famous names. Layer upon layer of concentrated, sweet, expansive, blackcurrant fruit is wrapped in a frame of toasty new oak and decent acidity. An awesome wine! Anticipated maturity: 1996-2015.

Make no mistake about it, the 1989 Chasse-Spleen is the finest wine this property has produced since their great 1949. This is one rare example where the wonderful performance of a property in 1985 and 1986 is surpassed by its 1989. This is a spectacularly rich, powerful, authoritative example of the vintage that can compete with and even surpass many of the most famous names. The architect of this wine is the immensely talented Bernadette Villars, who has produced what she considers the finest wine of her distinguished career. Layer upon layer of concentrated, sweet, expansive, blackcurrant fruit is wrapped in a frame of toasty new oak and decent acidity. But what is so impressive about this vintage of Chasse-Spleen is that the explosive finish just goes on and on, lasting nearly one minute. An awesome wine! Anticipated maturity: 1996-2015. Tasted six times. Consistent notes.

Big and chewy. Impressive. Dark ruby-colored, with cocoa, coffee and chocolate aromas covered by ripe fruit. Full-bodied and very rich, showing lots of chewy tannins and a long, roasted coffee and berry aftertaste.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004. (JS)

About Winery

Château Chasse-Spleen is the leading Moulis estate along with Château Poujeaux. Although it is classified only as a Cru Bourgeois, it regularly outperforms many of the Médoc's more renowned classed growths. There are two theories behind the château's rather unusual name: firstly, that, when Lord Byron visited the estate in 1821, he remarked `Quel remède pour chasser le spleen`. Secondly, that it is named after Baudelaire's poem, Spleen...Chasse-Spleen's wines were always noteworthy, though the quality improved dramatically with its acquisition by the Taillan Group, which also owns Château Haut-Bages-Libéral, in 1976. It was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband were killed in an accident while hiking in the Pyrénées in 1992. The property is now run by her daughter Claire.
