88 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 1998

A strict selection, the use of 40% new oak, and an extended maceration have produced a rich, full-bodied 1989 that offers both power and finesse. Deep ruby/purple, with gobs of red and black fruits in its aroma, this concentrated, impressively structured wine will prove to be a crowd pleaser. It is the finest Phelan-Segur I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: Now-2003. Last tasted, 4/91.

88 points,

Wine Spectator, May 1999

A very pretty red for current drinking. Ruby-colored center, and a brick-red edge. Plenty of berry and chocolate aromas. Medium-bodied, with fine, silky tannins and a long, ripe plum aftertaste. Delicious now but can hold for years.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now through 2006. -JS

About Winery

Bernard Phelan, a young Irish wine broker, left his home at the end of the 18th century to settle in Bordeaux. He married one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the market.  With the benefit of his father-in-law's experience, he was able to start thinking about making his own wines.
In order to do this, he acquired le Clos de Garamey, located in Saint-Estephe, in 1805, followed in 1810 by the Segurde Cabanac estate.  He thus created a magnificent wine-producing domain that remains practically unchanged today.
