88 -90 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 1992

One of Bordeaux's unmistakable nice guys, Jean-Paul Valette, has fashioned an extremely impressive effort. The 1990 Pavie is densely colored, with a reticent, but emerging bouquet of black- cherries, herbs, and oak. In the mouth, the wine is a classic vin de garde, with at least 25-30 years of aging potential. Unmistakable power is accompanied by fine extract, and the wine's balance is impeccable. It will be interesting to compare this top notch effort with Pavie's other successes during the decade of the eighties. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2015.

90 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 1993

The 1990 is an impressive, even blockbuster Pavie. Densely colored, with a reticent but emerging bouquet of black-cherries, herbs, and oak, it is a classic vin de garde, with at least 25-30 years of aging potential. Unmistakable power is accompanied by fine extract, a viscous, thick texture, and impeccable balance. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2015.

I am an admirer of proprietor Valette, so it has given me no pleasure to write so-so reviews for recent Pavie vintages. I was pleased in this blind tasting to see how strongly both the 1989 and 1990 Pavies performed. Both slightly eclipsed my scores given immediately after bottling. The impressive 1990 Pavie exhibits a deeper, more saturated ruby/garnet color, as well as a sweeter, more expressive bouquet of truffles, Asian spices, black-cherries, and smoked herbs. Full-bodied and powerful, with a meaty, beef blood-like richness, this backward, intense, deep, concentrated, muscular St.-Emilion needs 3-4 more years of cellaring; it should age well through 2018.

94 points,

Wine Spectator, March 1993

A steamroller of a wine with tons of extract. Shows superb tannin structure, and the toffee, floral and plum aromas and flavors keep coming. Better than the '89. Drink after 1998. 12,000 cases made. (JS)

About Winery

The ancient Pavie vineyard--going back at least as far as the 4th century AD--is located on the southern part of the Saint Emilion slope. Thanks to the excellent terroir, it is one of the top two chateaux in this part of the appellation (along with Ausone) as well as one of the finest in all Bordauex. Pavie has gone from strength to strength since Gerard Perse arrived in 1998.
