Reviews of 1990 Chapoutier Hermitage la Sizeranne Syrah
93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 1992 Chapoutier did extremely well with his northern Rhone vineyards in 1991. The 1990 Hermitage-La Sizeranne, made from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, has closed up since bottling. The color is a dark purple, and with coaxing, the super-ripe nose of cassis, licorice, minerals, and spices begins to emerge. This full-bodied, massively rich, tannic wine was aged in 60% new oak casks. It is gorgeously pure, with a finish that lasts for more than a minute. Last year I thought it was much more forward than the great Hermitages produced by Chave and Jaboulet. Now I am beginning to have doubts. I suspect this wine needs until the turn of the century to approach maturity. It should last for 25-30 years.
The young Michel Chapoutier continues his quest of cultivating his vineyards in an organic fashion, and turning out wines that reflect the soil, the grape, and the vintage. These concentrated (because of low yields) wines are made with minimal intervention by the winemaker.
Importer: Paterno Imports, Chicago, IL.
91 points, Wine Spectator August 1992 Ripe, rich and complex, with deep currant, earth, oak and spice flavors that are finely woven together. The tannins are firm and rugged and clamp down on the finish. Best after 1997. 8,500 cases made.
About 1990 Chapoutier Hermitage la Sizeranne Syrah
About the Winery Chapoutier
Chapoutier has existed in the Rhone valley since 1808. In 1879, a
distant Chapoutier began to buy vines and moved from simply growing to
wine production and marketing. Seven generations later, Michel
Chapoutier has taken over production and continued the legacy begun by
that first Chapoutier. His youth, determination, and innovation
combined with his commitment to his family's legacy has led him to
produce a line of exceptional wines. One of the innovations of
M.Chapoutier is the introduction of Biodynamic farming to his
vineyards. He also imports grapes from Spain and Australia as well as
continuing to harvest from the magnificient terroirs throughout France.
The Chapoutier label is the perfect combination of tradition and
contemporary innovation.
