Three bottles opened seemed uncharacteristically compressed, and the wine very dumb and closed. This is certainly a very complete, rich Grange that has been universally praised in all wine circles. Nevertheless, it is not showing well at present, although it is weighty and dense. What left me looking for an answer was the somewhat cool climate characteristics of the wine, with an almost menthol note to the red and black currant fruit. The wine showed some tart acidity as well. I suspect this wine is just closed down, needing a good 5-6 years to re-emerge. It seemed uncharacteristic of Grange, but the three bottles opened all were identical in their development. The color is certainly a healthy saturated purple, and the wine is large-scaled and balanced on the palate. That any Grange could behave in such an unforthcoming way is puzzling, but I am still an optimist about this vintage's ultimate potential. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Magnificent, exotic, a veritable cascade of opulent flavors--earthy currant, black cherry and licorice--on a grand frame of incredible length, wrapped in finely grained tannins. Feels like it can age through 2010 or 2020, at least.--Penfolds Grange vertical. 8,000 cases made. –HS

This wine was kind of tart but good. I liked it. My wife on the other hand well lets just say she didn't like it as much in fact she didn't like it at all.

About the Wine
"The 1998 vintage is predominantly Shiraz (97%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%)...Sourced primarily from the Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard and other Barossa Vineyards, with proportions from Padthaway and Magill Estate...Cool spring weather followed by a warm summer and very low rainfall created one of the classic vintages of the last two decades. Fruit quality was outstanding with incredible intensity of flavour, fine tannins and structure. The 1998 vintage of Penfolds Grange may rank amongst the very finest released...The nose is youthful and intense with dark, ripened Satsuma plum fruits rising above a base of liqueured dark chocolate and licorice. Overtones of malt, toasty barrel ferment and nutty oak meld effortlessly into an exquisitely aromatic offering...The palate displays intense layering of fruit - raspberry,blackcurrant and blackberry - laced with licorice and oak.The power of the fruit at the fore is balanced with ripe velvety tannins, offering an alluring even-textured palate with remarkable length."
