Beringer's 1991 Merlot from the Bancroft Vineyard on Howell Mountain is a noteworthy effort. It boasts an explosive nose of jammy black-cherries, herbs, and new oak, great intensity, exquisite richness, and a layered, voluptuously-textured finish. It should drink well for 12-15 years.
Beringer continues to make a strong case for being California's most popular and hottest winery.

Beringer's Merlot from the Bancroft Vineyard on Howell Mountain is one of the top three or four California Merlots. The 1991 is the best I have yet tasted, with an explosive nose of jammy black-cherries, herbs, and new oak. The wine reveals great intensity, exquisite richness, and a layered, voluptuously-textured finish. It is a winner!
Beringer continues to do everything right. Its staff of talented professionals may rank as the best in the business. Beringer possesses some experimental batches of wine that are not likely to be released outside the winery. However, given the quality of such wines as their 1992 Pinot Blanc, 1992 Melon, 1992 Pinot Gris, 1992 Auxerrois, and 1992 Viogner, they are breaking new ground in California. Moreover, prices are reasonable.

Young and complex, with layers of cherry, currant, chocolate and buttery oak that all fold together neatly. Flavors fan out on the finish, where it picks up a pretty vanilla edge. Has the tannins to age another three to five years, but it drinks well now. 11,000 cases made.
