Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2002

This is a very aromatic Grange that seems to be the product of a vintage where the wines are showing extremely well young. It is dense purple, with a sweet blackberry/cherry nose and some subtle cedar and licorice in the background, unctuously textured, thick, full, without as many nuances of some of the greatest vintages of Grange, but very concentrated and dense. Anticipated maturity: now-2017. Imported by Southcorp Wines North America, Monterey, CA; tel. (408) 655-4848.

The opaque purple-colored 1992 Grange exhibits an unevolved, grapy nose of sweet toasty oak, ripe prunes, black raspberries, and cassis. Full-bodied, with lavishly-displayed oaky notes, this formidably endowed, large-scaled wine should develop into an impressive example of Grange, although my instincts suggest it will not be quite as good as the 1990, 1986, or 1982. The wine was kept open for three days without any traces of oxidation. Give it 2-4 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 20 years. This winery continues to turn out an insipid selection of white wines, but the reds are all noteworthy, and some are reasonably good values. Ripe, smoky and spicy, this is a wine of extraordinary subtlety and complexity, powerful without showing too much muscle. It layers its anise, black cherry and blackberry flavors to keep them zingy through the finish. Shows a lot of depth and surprising restraint. Best from 2002 through 2005. 2,049 cases imported. –HS

About Winery

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies over a century and a half ago.

In 1844 Dr Penfold and his wife Mary purchased the Mackgill estate, "comprising 500 acres of the choicest land." By all accounts it was Mary Penfold who was responsible for the management and early wine-making responsibilities of the fledgling wine estate.

By the early 1960s Max Schubert saw the creation of a dynasty of wines that may differ in character from year to year, but would all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other. The backbone of Penfolds' emerging red wine portfolio - Bin 389, Bin 707, Bin 28 and Bin 128 - were all introduced during this time.

The remarkable reintroduction of Penfolds Bin 707 in 1976 illustrated Penfolds' commitment to a premium Cabernet Sauvignon and within just a few years would come to be recognized as one of Australia's leading wines.
