The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals an opaque black color, huge tannin, terrific purity, and density, a broad, heavyweight mouthfeel, and gobs of ripe tannin. It is a massive Cabernet Sauvignon that requires a decade of cellaring - at the minimum.

The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain may be even richer than the exquisite 1992. It offers the essence of Cabernet Sauvignon in its thick, rich, pure, blackcurrant flavors that ooze across the palate. The wine is not heavy, but it is so phenomenally concentrated and extracted that it leaves the taster speechless. Most Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernets require a minimum of 10-15 years of cellaring. My instincts suggest the 1993 possesses sweeter, riper tannin than usual. Is it a 50+ year wine? When I tasted this wine last year at the winery I found it to be closed and tight, particularly when tasted next to the more opulent, voluptuous, open 1992. In the recent tasting in March this immensely impressive wine was more open, displaying greater richness and breadth of flavor than previously. This wine is a colossal effort that was performing gorgeously when last tasted. Tel. (707) 965-3805

I find my adjectives somewhat restricted in describing Dunn's 1993 Cabernet Sauvignons. Both the Napa and the Howell Mountain cuvees are remarkably similar in style, with opaque purple colors. The scents that emerge are not so much complex as they are intense and promising. There are ripe, rich, pure notes of black-raspberries, cassis, minerals, and oak. Both 1993 cuvees are extremely full-bodied and tannic.

Young, tight and marked by cedary flavors, working its way into a core of currant, sage, mineral and spice flavors before the tannins kick in. Typically backward for this wine, so it's best cellared into 2001. 1,670 cases made.

Earthy, reductive aromas of anise, tar, mineral and currant lead to similar flavors that are intense, with firm, leather-scented tannins. Supple for a young Dunn Howell Mountain.--1993 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2007. 1,670 cases made. (JL)
