I had this wine on three separate occasions with identical tasting notes. When I tasted it at the chateau, I told proprietor, Alfred Tesseron, I thought it was the finest Pontet-Canet made under his administration, and possibly the greatest wine from this estate since 1961. Tesseron agreed, indicating this was the most severe selection he had ever authorized, permitting only 50% of the harvest to be included in Pontet-Canet, and utilizing a whopping 41% Merlot in the final blend, which also includes 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. In a subsequent tasting of Pauillacs, this wine stood out as one of the densest, richest, sweetest wines of the vintage, with a massive style, high, firm tannin, extraordinary opulence and richness, and more than enough fruit to hold up to the wine's powerful tannic structure. Deeply-colored, full-bodied, and rich, it is destined to become one of the great Pontet-Canets, of which there have been too few, especially in view of the vineyard's potential. The 1994 will need 5-7 years of cellaring and will keep for 25-30 years. A winner! Readers interested in buying Bordeaux futures should take note as Pontet-Canet is often one of the lowest priced Pauillacs.

Readers should take note that the Tesseron family is making major efforts to rebuild the image of Pontet-Canet and establish it as one of the finest wines of the northern Medoc. Quality has soared since the 1994 vintage, but prices have not yet caught up with the "new" Pontet-Canet. However, this is not a forward, luscious, rich, sweet, fruity style of Pauillac (such as the charming Pichon-Lalande and Haut-Batailley), but rather, a dense, masculine, massively-styled wine meant for long-term cellaring. One of the finest as well as longest-lived wines of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored 1994 needs 7-10 years of cellaring. A rich, impressive, full-bodied wine, it represents the finest Pontet-Canet produced since the 1961. This full-bodied, purely made wine is crammed with blackcurrant fruit, as well as forbiddingly tannic and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Impressive!

The 1994 Pontet-Canet has turned out to be the greatest wine from this estate in over 30 years. I had the wine on three separate occasions with identical tasting notes. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

Plenty of berry flavors, with spice notes and a mild, herbal undertone. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Better in 1998. 48,000 cases made.

About Winery

"The origins of the vineyard date back to the beginning of the 18th century, when Jean François Pontet, Master of the King's Horse and Major-General of the Médoc, put together several parcels of land to the north-west of Pauillac, just a few hundred metres from the Gironde , the great river of Bordeaux. A few years later, his descendants completed the work by acquiring the vineyards known as "La Maison de Canet". In the year 1750 one of the biggest wine estates in the Médoc was created - Château Pontet-Canet The most important feature of this estate was, and still is, the outcrops of gravelly soil, some of which are nearly 30 metres above sea-level, and it is these parts of the vineyard that give the property its extraordinary potential.
