In my opinion, this brilliantly run property should have been elevated in the recent reclassification of St.-Emilion. Opaque ruby/purple-colored, with a tight but promising nose of toasty new oak, black fruits, licorice, and spice, the 1994 Troplong-Mondot is built for the long haul. The wine possesses high tannin levels, as well as outstanding concentration and ripeness. It is largely closed except for some explosive sweetness and ripeness that appear at the back of the palate. Prospective purchasers should realize this wine requires 7-8 years of cellaring before it rounds out. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015.

It will be difficult to pick a favorite between Troplong-Mondot's exquisite 1994 and 1995 St.-Emilions. The 1994 possesses more grip, tannin, and structure, as well as an opaque black/purple color, and an impressively-endowed nose of black fruits, charcoal, spice, and pain grillee. Medium to full-bodied, with superb purity, richness, and layers of ripe black fruits, this moderately tannic, authoritatively-flavored wine will require 2-4 years of cellaring; it will keep for 15 or more. Unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage, it is significantly better than just about every other 1994 premier grand cru classe St.-Emilion. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

It is hard to believe that Troplong-Mondot's 1994 might turn out to be greater than the estate's profound 1990 and 1989. The 1994 represents the essence of wine, with a super-concentrated style and extraordinary purity and grace despite its awesome richness and size. It is interesting that women (in this case Christine Valette) often produce some of the most concentrated and massive wines of France. The color is an opaque black/purple and the nose offers up sensationally promising scents of black fruits, licorice, vanillin, and spices. Awesomely concentrated, with layers of fruit, this wine is tannic, pure, and harmonious. It will require 5-6 years of cellaring and will keep for 20-25.

Best Troplong ever. Impressive dark color and loads of mineral, berry and spice aromas lead to a full-bodied and very tannic (though the tannins are fine) mouthful. Very closed and tight now, this needs time to come around. Try in 2000.
