Reviews of 1994 Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select
99 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate December 1998 The current release, the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, is a prodigious Cabernet. I had it at a tasting in Japan, and the Japanese were as enthusiastic about it as my rating suggested they should be. They were crestfallen when informed they probably would not be able to buy multiple cases of the wine! The 1994 combines the vintage's spectacularly ripe, luscious fruit with a rarely seen degree of elegance and finesse. The wine is extremely rich, as well as gorgeously poised and graceful. The saturated ruby/purple color is accompanied by Medoc-like, lead pencil aromas intermixed with cassis, cedar, minerals, and spice. I wrote the word "great" four different times in my most recent tasting note, which mirrored every other tasting note I have. It is full-bodied and seamless, with a silky texture, voluptuous richness, and fabulous purity. The finish lasts for over 40 seconds. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025.
95 points, Stephen Tanzer November 1998 Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines sappy cassis, blueberry, brown spices and chocolate, plus a suggestion of dust. Great concentration and depth in the mouth; dense but juicy, with wild flavors of chocolate covered cherry, mocha, leather and game. Pliant, multilayered and seamless. A classic California cabernet, already displaying an extravagant personality. Slightly tight but very long on the finish. This was a knockout from barrel 18 months ago, and I'm happy to report that it's every bit as good in the bottle.
93 points, Wine Spectator November 2004 A dark, dense and potent youngster, with a tight core of juicy blackberry and black cherry fruit that's deeply concentrated and supported by firm, ripe, integrated tannins. It's still a little awkward, so decanting is advised.--California Cabernet '74/'84/'94 retrospective. Drink now through 2009. 2,000 cases made. –JL

About the Wine
"Hillside Select is made of 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon fruit sourced from rugged hillside vineyard blocks on our Stags Leap District Estate. Truly a “wine of a place,” this Cabernet exemplifies the extraordinary richness and suppleness consistently produced in this little valley within a valley...made of 100% hillside-grown Cabernet...This Hillside Select from the legendary 2001 vintage offers aromatic and extremely concentrated black currant fruit; round, rich, layered flavors, with a balanced seasoning of minerals, tobacco, and herbs; a core of sweetness emerges from our small-berried hillside fruit with a long, mouth-filling finish of dark chocolate, vanilla and spice all surrounded by the classic silky tannins of the Stags Leap District.
Hillside Select is aged a full four years prior to release (three years in Alliers and Tronçais oak barrels and one year in the bottle). While enjoyable today, this wine will gain richness and maturity with up to 20 years of careful cellaring...a potentially perfect wine in the making. A skyscraper that builds in the mouth with multiple dimensions, amazing layers of flavor, great delicacy, and tremendous purity … as good as Cabernet can be..."
