Readers desiring an introduction to the Chave mystique are well-advised to check out his red wine made from the hillsides of St.-Joseph. It will not last more than a decade, but it is a deliciously ripe, pure, elegant, cassis and cherry-scented wine with plenty of fruit and charm. After tasting through the unassembled cuvees, the 1995 red Hermitage would appear to possess magnificent potential. Whether the wine possessed the elegant delicacy of Rocoules, the dense, tannic, power of L'Hermite, the sweet, wild berry perfume and complexity of Peleat, the exotic, smoky, roasted, sexy ripeness and voluptuousness of Meal, or the extraordinary concentration, massive richness, and mineral, Richebourg-like complexity of Les Bessards, the 1995 red Hermitage should prove to be Chave's finest vintage since 1990. Frankly, I believe it will eclipse the superb 1991s produced by Chave. It is a wine with exceptional richness and power. Chave believes (and I agree), that the 1995, more than most vintages, expresses the eloquence and complexity of the great terroirs of Hermitage. After tasting through the exceptional cuvee of Les Bessards, aged in 100% new oak casks, I was convinced by the twinkle in the eyes of Jean-Louis and Gerard, that there is going to be a Cuvee Cathelin in 1995, the first produced since the two heroic vintages of 1990 and 1991.

The magnificent 1995 Hermitage is one of the classic Rhones of the vintage. The wine, which had just been bottled, was revealing no signs of fatigue. The color is opaque purple, and the wine is beautifully made, offering up scents of violets and black currants, along with the tell-tale aromas of tar, truffle, mineral, and earth. This wine could be called the Musigny of Hermitage. It is medium to full-bodied (less massive than the 1990 and 1989), with good underlying acidity, and powerful but sweet tannin in the finish. Do not expect the 1995 to possess the power of the 1989 or 1990 as it is made along the lines of the 1991, but even more fragrant. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.

Ruby-red, a bit less saturated than the '96. More sauvage aromas of black fruits, game, gunflint, licorice, smoke, spice, roast coffee, mint and pepper subtle and very complex. Wonderful sweetness and purity in the mouth, but a wine of terrific cut and grip. Finishes with substantial chewy tannins that will require extended bottle aging. But not at all dry on the back end. Perhaps more classic Hermitage than the cooler '96.

Deep and complex, with currant, Provençal herbs, green olive and mineral-laden character, this full-bodied red is smooth, ripe and round until the very finish, which is now quite chewy and tannic. Should blossom with cellaring. Best from 2003 through 2007. 2,330 cases made. –PM
