Because of the release program employed by Kistler, the 1995 Chardonnays are now coming on the market. My scores of those wines are as follows: 1995 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch (93). Readers should recognize that Kistler's policy is to sell most of their production directly to consumers and restaurants. Readers who live in states that permit direct shipment of California wines should be sure and get on the winery's mailing list.

The 1995 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is the most forward, evolved, open-knit, and complex of the Kistler 1995s that I tasted. The wine possesses a bright, medium straw/gold color, suggesting more advanced maturity. The flamboyant nose offers up plenty of sweet, rich, honeyed pear/pineapple, and smoky aromas. This full-bodied Chardonnay possesses exceptional fruit purity, a layered texture, and a sweet mid-palate. This was the only 1995 Kistler Chardonnay that seemed close to offering immediate drinkability, although I suspect this wine has a minimum of 4-5 years of life. Can anyone think of another winery that produces so many profound Chardonnays? While the production of the single vineyard Chardonnays is small, Kistler's total production reaches 18,000 cases. All of their marvelous Chardonnays are bottled without any filtration, and some without fining. It should be obvious from those comments that Kistler Vineyards is breaking new qualitative ground in view of what they are able to achieve at these production levels.
