Reviews of 1995 Gaja, Angelo Barbaresco Nebbiolo

90 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
January 1999
1995 tends to be a good rather than great vintage in Piedmont, but Gaja's sensational 1995s are among the stars of the vintage. This wine possesses extremely saturated dark ruby/purple colors, almost atypical for Nebbiolo. The 1995 Barbaresco offers a superb nose of licorice, cherry fruit, strawberries, flowers, and toasty scents. Ripe, dense, and lush, with an alluring, sexy personality, it is one of the more forward, generic Barbarescos Gaja has produced. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. Most impressive. Hard to tell it apart from the single-vineyard i crus n because it's so massive while also offering an incredibly dense texture. Shows mineral, stonelike, spicy and black currant character, while some new oak plays subtly in the background. Firm tannins on the finish. Best from 2005 through 2015. 2,000 cases made. –PM

Has anyone here ever tried a wine that was just shocking? That the best word I can I think of to describe this wine shocking. By shocking I mean Shockingly Good. There are aromas of Strawberries and flowers. An awesome dark coloring and just all around a good wine.

About 1995 Gaja, Angelo Barbaresco Nebbiolo

About the Winery Gaja, Angelo

The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by four generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the Winery's current owner. In 1994 Gaja acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. The property's forty acres of vineyards produce two Brunello di Montalcino wines called Sugarille and Rennina.

In 1996 Gaja acquired a second property in Tuscany, Ca'Marcanda, located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Of the property's 200 acres, 150 have been planted with new vineyards: primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

Currently, the Gaja Winery owns 250 acres of vineyards in Piedmont, located in the Barbaresco district (Barbaresco and Treiso) and the Barolo district (Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra).
