92 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2002

An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. The wine is textured, jammy, full-bodied, with impressive levels of extract, glycerin, and black fruit flavors. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. Imported by Southcorp Wines North America, Monterey, CA; tel. (408) 655-4848.

92 points,

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, July 1999

Saturated deep ruby. Deep, superripe aromas of candied raspberry, game, coffee, woodsmoke, scotch and clove. Silky, lush and expansive on the palate; concentrated flavors are sweet and minerally, and nicely framed by a crunchy note of bittersweet berry skin. Really explodes in the mouth and saturates the palate. Seems fully expressed already, but should last well in bottle.

97 points,

Wine Spectator, December 2000

A massive wine, majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure. Flavors of plum, blackberry, chocolate and pepper, with hints of cedar, licorice and mint, swirl through the exotic finish. Tannins swarm but don't overwhelm the finish, which echoes all day and night. Best from 2004 through 2020. 9,800 cases made. –HS

About Winery

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies over a century and a half ago.

In 1844 Dr Penfold and his wife Mary purchased the Mackgill estate, "comprising 500 acres of the choicest land." By all accounts it was Mary Penfold who was responsible for the management and early wine-making responsibilities of the fledgling wine estate.

By the early 1960s Max Schubert saw the creation of a dynasty of wines that may differ in character from year to year, but would all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other. The backbone of Penfolds' emerging red wine portfolio - Bin 389, Bin 707, Bin 28 and Bin 128 - were all introduced during this time.

The remarkable reintroduction of Penfolds Bin 707 in 1976 illustrated Penfolds' commitment to a premium Cabernet Sauvignon and within just a few years would come to be recognized as one of Australia's leading wines.
