Reviews of 1996 Clair, Bruno Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru Pinot Noir
92-95 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate August 1998 This magnificent, dark ruby-colored wine possesses awesome aromas reminiscent of cookie dough covered with blackberry syrup, violets, and roses. Powerful and masculine, yet elegant and refined this gem has a complex, concentrated, and deep character that displays layer upon layer of ripe red and black fruits intermingled with stones, earth, and minerals. Loads of soft, ripe tannins can be discerned in its prodigiously long finish. It may very well be the finest red I've yet tasted from Bruno Clair. Projected maturity: 2003-2008.
Bruno Clair described this vintage as abundant (he says his Marsannays averaged 40-45 hectoliters/hectare and his other vineyards averaged yields in the 35-40 h/h range) and perfectly healthy as not a trace of rot was spotted. He went on to say that his '96s have as much as 4 grams per liter of acid, the highest level he has ever seen in Burgundy.
94 points, Stephen Tanzer April 1999 Red-ruby. Deep, superripe aromas of redcurrant, minerals, humus and licorice, along with an intriguing vegetal/spicy aspect. Large-scaled, chewy and sweet, but not at all thick or overly sweet; a muscular, powerful wine with a multilayered texture and strong soil character. Finishes with substantial but thoroughly ripe tannins. Very youthfully unevolved. Also tasted: Chambolle-Musigny.

About the Winery Clair, Bruno
Clive Coates
describes this as the “best cellar in the village” of Marsannay, which
is located at the northernmost tip of the Côte de Nuits. The domaine is
one of the finest in Burgundy, and this vigneron is one to watch in the
future, but he has not always enjoyed such auspicious prospects. In
1978, Bruno Clair started to replant a parcel of his own in Marsannay,
rented vineyard in Fixin, and purchased land in Morey-St.-Denis to
clear and plant. Gradually he built his domaine to its present size of
21.06 hectares. The vine age ranges from 5-90 years. Bruno Clair is
joined in the cellar by Philippe Brun. The white wines are a Marsannay
Blanc produced from equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, a
Morey-St.-Denis from 100% Chardonnay, and Corton- Charlemagne. They are
vinified in cask, second and third year oak, with just a touch of new
oak, and are given long, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. The
Pinot Noir is 40-80% destemmed, vatted and macerated for 4-5 days, with
frequent pumping over before fermentation begins. Natural yeasts are
provided from 20% whole bunches in each vat to slow fermentation and
extract more finesse and fruit. The wine is given a long cuvaison in
open wood cuves for 17-22 days, then aged, a portion in new oak casks
and a portion in small barrels, one third of which are new each year.
The wine will age for 6-12 months, depending upon the vintage, before
bottling. “A splendid range of wines.” Clive Coates, The Vine
