1996 Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard
Reviews of 1996 Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard
90-92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate December 1997 The 1996 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard is a smoky, crisp, light golden-colored wine, with medium to full body, and a leesy, bread dough-like aroma, with plenty of honeyed citrus-like fruit intermixed with spice and smoke. Produced from one of Sonoma's coolest micro-climates, it possesses tart acidity for a 1996, and merits 5-7 years of cellaring. All the Kistler Chardonnays are made in a Burgundian manner. They are barrel-fermented, given full malolactic fermentation, extensive lees stirring, racked out of their barrels following a year's cask aging, and allowed to settle in tank until bottling, which usually occurs without any fining or filtration. All of the wines reviewed in this segment were tasted from tank as they were awaiting bottling early next year.
96 points, Wine Spectator March 1999 Tightly reined in, intense and deeply concentrated, with an elegant, bright core of pear, anise, hazelnut, citrus and honeyed notes, lingering long and lively on the finish...

About the Wine
"Combines the lovely sweetness of fully ripe fruit with a strong sense of underlying minerality. Its sharply focused flavors are of stone fruits and wet stones. A most harmonious and generous wine which conveys a strong impression of soil character...The Chardonnays from this vintage are well structured, sharply delineated wines which at the same time manage to exhibit a large measure of subtlety and nuance. They are classic wines with a solid core of ripe fruit at their center without being fruit-driven or dominated by transitory floral or high-toned fruit esters..."
