1996 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 1996 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux Blend
92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 1999 This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.
92 points, Stephen Tanzer June 1999 Full ruby color. Blueberry, roasted nuts, mint and a hint of game on the nose. Fat, sweet and multilayered; rich, ripe and deep. Offers a generous mouthfeel for a young '96 from the Medoc. Substantial ripe tannins spread out over the palate. Very long, ripe aftertaste. 92 points
90 points, Wine Spectator January 1999 A well-structured, racy red. Lovely, fresh aromas of raspberries, cream and currants. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins which are firm yet silky. One of the more reasonably priced top '96s. Best after 2000. (JS)

About 1996 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Leoville-Barton
"Chateau Leoville Barton is the third (and smallest) piece of the famous trio of Saint Julien properties that 200 years ago formed one estate (Chateau Leoville) belonging to Alexandre de Gasq. It has been the property of the illustrious Barton family since 1836. Leoville Barton has no actual house or winery, so the wine is made and bottled at the Barton's neighboring property, Chateau Langoa-Barton...Leoville Barton lies between the towns of Beychevelle and Saint Julien, the estate's few buildings sit directly on the vineyard road, and the vineyards lie just to its west...Vineyard is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 0% Cabernet Franc. This planting mix has evolved over the years since Anthony Barton took over the management of the Leoville Barton. The percentage of Merlot has increased from about 15% in the 1970s and Cabernet Franc has disappeared.
About the Wine
"One of the most loved clarets of all and one that goes from strength to strength. Balance is the key feature of this with along with wonderful refinement and length. A very fine 1999 and one that will age gracefully as well...For laying down, Red, Full Bodied, Dry, 12.5% alcohol..."
