1997 Kistler Chardonnay Durell Vineyard
Chardonnay: 750ml
$69.99
about this wine:
"Old style Burgundian aromas combining light sulfides, hazelnuts and minerals. Compellingly intense and precise on the palate, with its complexity derived from flavors of grilled nuts and stones rather than primary fruit...The Chardonnays from this vintage are well structured, sharply delineated wines which at the same time manage to exhibit a large measure of subtlety and nuance. They are classic wines with a solid core of ripe fruit at their center without being fruit-driven or dominated by transitory floral or high-toned fruit esters, as are so many chardonnays today..."

Readers looking for a Chardonnay that possesses the tropical fruit spectrum, without completely abandoning the complex mineral character, will be pleased with the 1997 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard. The poor vigor of these rocky soils, combined with such clones as Hyde, has resulted in a wine with zesty acidity, medium to full body, outstanding ripeness and purity, and loads of orange blossom/lemony fruit in addition to hints of peach and pineapple. This wine requires 1-2 years of cellaring, and should have an unusually long life of 8-10 years.

Medium-deep straw color. Bright nose combines dried and citrus fruits with hints of clove and hazelnut. Fat and full but with a solid mineral spine. Sound acids give the flavors firm shape. Finishes spicy and long. 92 points

A seamless wine of classic proportions. Ripe, rich and polished, with tiers of pear, citrus, melon, hazelnut and fig culminating in a long, polished aftertaste. Kudos to Kistler. Drink now through 2006. 1,882 cases made. (JL)
