1997 Rotllan Torra Tirant

Proprietary Blend: 750ml

$58.99

about this wine:

This wine is named for Tirant Lo Blanc, a heroic medieval knight who responded to the feudal chivalry ideals and principles proper to the Middle Age. His heroic deeds range from medieval tournaments to unceasing wars and maids and princesses rescuing.

This hero is strong and clever but also refined and elegant; he symbolizes a dark-colored wine with substance-- huge, with structure and richness in tannins, strong and powerful but also subtle and exquisite.

...The superb, opaque purple-colored 1997 Tirant exhibits sweet, concentrated, jammy fruit intertwined with notions of asphalt, pepper, liquid minerals, and subtle spicy wood...

Wine & Spirits, August 2000

...Full red-ruby. Sappy, floral aromas of red berries, rose petal, minerals and nutty, vanillin oak. Thick but vinous, with nuanced flavors of plum, redcurrant, tobacco and grilled nuts. Quite spicy and strong on the back end...

95 points,

Wine Spectator, June 2000

...Powerful and intense, this Spanish red is as ripe and rich as young Vintage Port, bursting with flavors of black cherries and blueberries, chocolate and coffee, supported by muscular yet round tannins. An impressive achievement in an age of blockbuster wines...

About Winery

Rottlan Torra is a winery based in Torroja del Priorat, Spain. Jordi Rottlan Torra founded this winery with his family in 1984. One of the pioneers of the new wave of winemakers who entered this region, he had the vision to see the possibilities that existed. After having spent considerable time working in and around the bodegas in the Penedes region he realized that the mountains where his family vacationed contained the primary materiel for the making of world class wines.  He began buying land planted with ancient vineyards, some over one hundred yars old. The winery is located in a former monastary of the small village of Torroja del Priorat.  This ancient area boasts steep hillside vineyards of Grenache, Carignan, and Cabernet Sauvignon at 2000 feet elevation.

In 1997 Rotllan Torra exploded on the Spanish wine making scene with the release of the Amadis 1995, a wine from hundred-year-old vines.  It was named by the top two publications in the Spanish wine industry as one of the top wines of the year.
