I am going to step out on the proverbial limb and state that I believe Seavey's 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon will be their finest Cabernet since the monumental 1991. There were 1,800 cases of this offering, which reveals that element of sur-maturite often found in the greatest wines. The opaque purple color is accompanied by fabulous sweet black fruits and promising floral, spice box scents complemented by the judicious use of oak barrels (35% new). Phenomenally deep, layered, and textured, with full body, and well-concealed high alcohol (14.5%), this is a terrific, unctuously-textured, concentrated, and evolved Cabernet Sauvignon that should be accessible when released, but age for 20-25 years.

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (1,400 cases) is very good. I rated this wine 96 last year, but after an additional year of bottle age, it may be even better. It spent 18 months in 40-45% new French oak, and was bottled after a light fining yet no filtration.

The opaque black/purple-colored 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon is the finest Seavey Cabernet since the 1991. Production of this 98% Cabernet Sauvignon / 2% Petit Verdot blend is 1,400 cases. The bouquet offers aromas of licorice, jammy cassis, and toast. Sensationally concentrated and multi-layered, this full-bodied, gorgeously symmetrical classic boasts an unctuous texture as well as fabulous length (the finish lasts 50+ seconds). It is one of the majestic Cabernet Sauvignons of this top flight vintage (of which there are many). Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. (release date 10/00)

Floral, exciting and chocolaty, this is a dense, rich, well-crafted beauty. Yummy is one of the best ways to describe it. It has full but friendly tannins, all the length you could ask for, and in the final analysis it leaves an impression of heft and significance.

Dark, rich and perfumed, with ripe, supple black cherry, currant, chocolate, herb and sage notes. Finishes with a supple texture and fine tannins, making it appealing now. Drink now through 2010. 1,400 cases made. (JL)
