Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2000

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, is a beauty. The healthy ruby/purple color is followed by classic, unevolved but promising aromas of minerals, cedar, smoke, and black currants. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with admirable purity, a sweet, lush mid-palate, and ripe tannin in the finish. The top-notch 1997 is a classic, restrained. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. Tel. Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2000

Full ruby-red. Expressive nose combines black raspberry, currant, black cherry, chocolate, tobacco and sandalwood. Lush and sweet but fresh, with a firm edge of acidity giving shape to the flavors. Big and mouthfilling but not at all heavy. The tannins are suave and fine. A bit dominated by the oak today. This wine is virtually always in an awkward stage about six months after the bottling, says Bart Araujo, although I recall that the '96 was atypically showy a year ago. 92(+?) points

About Winery

Our estate is a Chateau-style wine property located in the northeast Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Its two primary components are the 38-acre Eisele Vineyard, and a winery and cave complex we designed and built specifically to vinify only Eisele Vineyard grapes.

The Eisele Vineyard is one of the most respected Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Napa Valley, equivalent to a premier cru Bordeaux. Warm days, cool nights and well-drained cobbly soils produce remarkable wines. The vineyard was established more than 120 years ago, and was first planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1964. When we acquired it in 1990, we began extensive renovation of the existing buildings, created a new winery and caves, and in the vineyard, refined the varietal mix and upgraded clone-rootstock combinations, to realize the property's potential for joining the international elite of limited production wine estates oriented exclusively to quality.
