Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 1998
Following two phenomenally successful vintages, the 1997 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. No Cabernet Franc made it into the final blend. The harvest took place between September 11 and September 30, with approximately 35% of the production relegated to the estate's second wine. The 1997 is a hedonistic, dark purple-colored wine with sweet cassis fruit dominating all other potential nuances. In short, this is akin to drinking a creme de cassis cocktail. Medium-bodied, with low acidity, admirable fat in the mid-palate, and good length, this delicious, approachable, classic Pauillac should drink exceptionally well young, yet last for 12 years.
