There is good availability (10,000 cases produced) of the outstanding 1997 Merlot (75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon). It exhibits copious quantities of cedar, coffee, plum, and black cherry/cassis fruit. The texture is fleshy and open-knit, with gobs of ripeness. Drink this medium-bodied, lush, pure Merlot over the next 10-12 years.

The 1997 Merlot (80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) could merit an outstanding rating. While it may not possess the weight and rustic fullness of the 1996, it offers vivid fruit, soaring aromatics, and a soft, medium-bodied, well-textured personality with the emphasis on rich berry fruit, a seamless texture, and enough oak to provide additional nuances. It should drink well for a decade.

Winemaker Elias Fernandez has created a beauty with this blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s round and rich, with juicy black-cherry fruit. The finish is long and luscious, with soft tannins and lingering layers of flavor.

Earthy initially, it builds in richness, with ripe, fleshy currant, black cherry, anise, sage and cedar notes, turning supple. Drink now through 2006. 10,000 cases made. (JL)
