The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is an impressive effort. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by a soft, precocious, evolved, up-front style with gorgeous black fruits, medium to full body, soft tannin, and good fatness allied to elegance and suppleness. While it does not possess much volume or density, it is a delicious wine to drink over the next decade.

Saturated ruby. Restrained, somewhat oaky aromas of blueberry, blackberry and dark chocolate; in need of a racking. Juicy, high-pitched and floral, with compellingly sweet flavor of crystallized dark berries. Not as big as the '97 Etude cabernet but impressively smooth and even for the vintage. Finishes with substantial but ripe tannins and a late burst of oak. A strong effort for '98-no surprise, in light of Soter's success in the similarly tricky 1993 vintage. 90-92 points

Saturated ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of redcurrant, cherry, dark chocolate and mocha. Smooth and seamless but also vinous and juicy, with a strong mineral character contributing to the impression of intensity. Not an especially fleshy wine but suave, fresh and persistent. Tannins are firm but not at all dry. A strong performance for the vintage, which comes as no surprise given the way Tony Soter succeeded with his own and his clients' cabernet-based wines in the difficult 1993 vintage. 90 points
