Burghound, October 2001

Earthy, backward and relatively reserved aromas lead to dense, round and while this is not especially complex at the moment, it is quite showy and extremely long. In short, this is very much a baby that will take its sweet time coming around. For the patient though this isn't a wine for the next 25 years.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2000

The saturated medium-to-dark ruby-colored 1998 Clos de Vougeot has superb talcum powder, rose, spice, and juicy blackberry aromatics. On the palate it has huge sweetness in the attack, with black pit fruits and cassis flavors. It then slams shut on rugged, hard tannins that will most likely never soften.

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, March 2000

Ruby-red. Sappy, sweet aromas of black cherry and licorice. Very backward and closed on the palate, even tough today, with major, tongue-dusting tannins. Currently dominated by its powerful structure, but the black fruit, herbal and mint flavors show superb sweetness. This may need a good decade of bottle aging.

About Winery

Today, this is the greatest estate in Burgundy, producing uncompromising wines of irrefutable longevity and intensity. ...

For nearly 15 years, Bize-Leroy has stood at the top of the Burgundy pyramid, alone both literally and figuratively in her pursuit of the finest wine Burgundy can produce. It is almost criminal to try to describe wines that may be the greatest red Burgundies I will ever taste in my life. As even the immodest Lalou Bize-Leroy says, these wines are "an accident of nature." Tasting them, with their extraordinary ripeness, unctuousness, and opulence, with no hard tannin to be found, makes one think that, yes, low yields do translate into physiologically ripe fruit, concentrated wines, and exquisite quality. ...

I am not alone in believing her wines are the reference point for Burgundy. ... --- Robert Parker "The World's Greatest Wine Estates"
