The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix is a firm, tannic effort offering scents of pine trees, balsam wood, resin, and black cherry and berry fruit. Earthy and firm, with moderate tannin, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 14+ years.

From a specific lieux-dit (vineyard) in the middle of the appellation, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix exhibits a saturated dark ruby/purple color as well as a spicy, peppery, jammy black fruit-scented nose. On the palate, resiny notes mix with the wine's full-bodied, nicely layered, multidimensional personality. Impressive purity, balance, and character are present. The vintage's low acidity and ample alcohol and glycerin give this 1998 a forward, attractive appeal. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015.

Clean, ripe and fresh, offering pretty plum, raspberry and wild strawberry. Medium-bodied and sweet-tasting, it lacks the complexity of a grand vin, but what a delight to drink with everyday meals. Drink now through 2007. 2,000 cases made. –PM
