Good as the regular 1998 Brunello di Montalcino was, I was frankly not expecting a wine as outstanding as the 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia. Very intense and focused in aroma and with penetrating notes of plums, red currants, liquorice, and incense, it is rich, full, and velvety on the palate, the sizeable extraction balanced by the velvet texture and distinctive tannins. Impeccable in the craftsmanship of its maker, this is Sangiovese at its best. Drink: 2005-2020.

A chunky Brunello with tobacco, plum and cherry character. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Needs a bit of time. Best after 2004. 500 cases made. –JS
