1998 Merryvale Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
Cabernet Sauvignon: 750ml
$59.99
Chris Greene, JJ Buckley, November 2012
Dense core with a rim edging towards brick. Initial aromas of tamari, cola nut, blackberry and black cherry gives way to a bouquet of prune, leather, dusty earth, and a hint of camphor. The palate entry is still youthful, hanging on to the fresh blackberry and currant fruit, evolving into tertiary notes of dried underbrush, bell pepper, dried fruits and leather. The bell pepper and herbal qualities carry through into the medium-long finish. Tannins have softened a lot, but are substantial enough to complement your prime rib or pot roast. Acidity keeps this quite alive, zippy even. Lots of life left in this gentle giant, but it's in its prime now.

Supple and harmonious, with polished coffee, herb, currant and bell pepper notes that are focused and complex. Drink now through 2006. 5,000 cases made. –JL
