The deep ruby/purple-colored, velvety-textured, full-bodied, accessible 1999 Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette offers an open-knit nose of pepper, cassis, minerals, and cedar. The wine possesses sweet tannin, medium to full body, and a supple-textured yet delineated style. It will be its finest between 2004-2016. This is a good commercial example. The significant difference in quality between the outstanding 1999 northern Rhone vintage and the above average yet essentially correct 2000 is dramatically evidenced in Delas's wines. The 2000 red offerings reveal charming ripeness, but also the vintage's softness, lightness, and lack of depth. Importer: Maison Marques et Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 286-2000.

This is a powerful, rich wine, aged in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old barrels. It is bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The 1999 Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette displays soft, sweet tannin, along with a black/purple color, and a pure, sweet nose of cassis and minerals. Full-bodied, long, and voluptuous, it will drink well young, yet last for 20-25 years. Importer: Maison Marques et Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 286-2000.

Refined and classy. This elegant, medium- to full-bodied Hermitage fans out on the palate, with a wonderful mineral flavor, cassis, roasted chestnut, ripe fig. But it is the texture that is so seductive--both firm and smooth. Long, charming, citrusy finish. Tempting now, but built for the cellar. Best from 2005 through 2020. 3,300 cases made. –PM
