Classic, highly aromatic nose combines truffle, tobacco, camphor, marzipan, licorice and brown spices. Lush, sweet and smooth, with a chewy impression of extract. Much more vigorous than the young 2000, but rather imploded in the middle palate despite its impressive richness. Notes of chocolate and menthol. Finishes with slow-building, granular, sweet tannins and excellent grip and length. Should make a classic Barolo. This was due to be bottled the week after my visit, a couple months later than normal. 91-93 points

'Highly Recommended' - Fantastic aromas of bright berry, fresh mushroom and minerals. Full-bodied, with excellent concentration of fruit and silky, ripe tannins. Long and delicious. Almost as great as the 1997. Best after 2007. 2,000 cases made. (JS)
