Reviews of 1999 Chateau Lagrezette Le Pigeonnier Malbec
90-94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate August 2000 This small, 500-case cuvee, made from old-vine Malbec, is sure to cause ripples in the Cahors appellation. It is certainly the finest wine I have tasted from Cahors, whose vignerons collectively tend to underachieve. Unlike many Cahors that are blended with Tannat and Merlot, this is 100% Malbec. Made from extraordinarily small yields of 18-20 hectoliters per hectare, it is aged for 24-30 months in 100% new French oak, and bottled without filtration. The wine is produced under the guidance of famed oenologist Michel Rolland.
A fine wine, an inky/purple-colored offering with tremendous intensity as well as an extraordinary nose of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and smoke. Extremely full-bodied, with low acidity and sweet tannin, it will not be released for two years.
91 points, Wine Spectator January 2006 Concentrated, balanced and structured, with dark plum, cassis and dark chocolate flavors, backed up by intense yet balanced tannins. Creamy notes fill the finish, with touches of mint and espresso. Drink now through 2012. 548 cases made.
