Brick-laden garnet hue with a nose of burnished dried cherry, star anise and black pepper. The palate is well intergrated with a similar cherry spectrum infused with dried cranberry, worked leather and olive tapenade. The bright acidity keeps the whole package together from entry to finish. The wood influence has harmonized beautifully with the delicate fruit, making for a pleasurable experience and displaying how handsomely a single-vineyard sangiovese can perform when properly cellared. This wine would taste divine with a veal chop with porcini mushrooms.

The 1999 Flaccianello della Pieve brings together depth, structure and considerable aromatic complexity. It is a gorgeous wine with all its elements beautifully in place. The 1999 isn't a huge, imposing Flaccianello from a structural perspective, instead it emphasizes a more classic expression of Sangiovese in its aromas and flavors. There is more than enough freshness layered into the fruit for the 1999 to drink well for a number of years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. -Antonio Galloni

Fascinating aromas of berries, fresh mushrooms and beef. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a lovely finish. Gorgeous. Best after 2004. 4,500 cases made.
