94 -96 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2002

The 2000 possesses great intensity and massive concentration, yet is extremely light and delicate. The opaque purple color is followed by a compelling effort displaying surreal levels of extract and richness as well as a phenomenally complex bouquet of blueberry liqueur, mocha, cigar smoke, new saddle leather, plums, and roasted nuts. Amazingly pure, textured, and voluptuous, with moderately high tannin in the finish, this knock-out 2000 will be at its finest between 2006-2025.

A prodigious effort from a very good to excellent rather than outstanding vintage for Pomerol, Clos l'Eglise is one of the candidates for the Pomerol of the vintage. A great deal of credit as well as appreciation should be given to the proprietor, the Cathiard-Garcin family, who has made immense investments in this property in order to elevate it to the pinnacle of Pomerol. They have succeeded in producing a complex, concentrated 2000 Clos l'Eglise.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2003

A monumental wine that has gained weight considerably, the 2000 Clos l'Eglise seems to be every bit as powerful, rich, and potentially complex as the surreal 1998, which also seems to be growing in stature in the bottle. Deep ruby/purple, with a nose of cocoa, toffee, plum, fig, and blackberry, the wine has a full-bodied palate impression, with extraordinary purity, texture, and that multi-layered, highly nuanced finish that goes on for close to a minute. This wine has turned out to be spectacular, and even better from bottle than it was from cask. Nevertheless, it is a wine that will require more patience than the 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025. Kudos!

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2001

Full ruby. Sexy, Vosne-Romanee-like aromas of blackberry, cedar, mocha, sandalwood and violet. Bright, juicy black fruit, mocha and leather flavors boast excellent intensity and purity, and a nicely restrained sweetness. Finishes with even tannins and terrific length, though the wine strong oak component leaves a trace of dryness on the aftertaste. 89-92 points

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2001

Good medium-deep ruby. Perfumed, liqueur-like aromas of cherry, raspberry and Valrhona chocolate; shows an almost port-like ripeness. Lush, fat and very rich; pliant and mouthfilling. The bitter chocolate element carries through on the palate. Finishes very long and violety, with big but even, sweet tannins hitting the palate very late. Highly promising Cotes de Castillon wine from the Gerard Perse/Alain Raynaud stable. 89-92 points

Saturated ruby. Exotic aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, leather, mocha and coffee. Sweet and creamy, with lovely old-viney merlot notes of dark fruits, chocolate and minerals. Impressively ripe, rich and concentrated. This has absorbed the new oak well, a tribute to the strength of the raw materials here. 91-93 points

($215-$279) Full ruby-red. Superripe, alluring aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur, mocha, coffee, game, violet and truffle. Thick, concentrated and sexy, with perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine uncanny vivacity and lightness of touch considering its great ripeness and richness. Underlying minerality contributes to the impression of precision. Very intensely flavored and long on personality. An utterly captivating drink. 93 points

94 points,

Wine Spectator, March 2003

Fascinating wine. Dark colored, with an intense aroma of violets and berries, with hints of minerals. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a succulent finish of exotic fruit. Best after 2010. 1,330 cases made. (JS)
