about this wine:
"The 2001 Rudd Oakville Estate is the second vintage from the newly replanted vineyard at the corner of Oakville Crossroad and Silverado Trail. The vineyard is planted in rocky, red volcanic soils at the foot of the Vaca Mountains using high density planting and low vigor rootstock to encourage the vines to produce smaller, highly concentrated berries. The 2001 was made primarily from Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux clone that has proven very successful in our Oakville terroir. The 2001 growing season began a week earlier than normal but was back on track by early September. Warm-to-hot weather during bloom resulted in a short flowering period that promoted even ripening with slightly below average crop levels. Harvest began on September 4 and was completed on October 13. The weather during harvest was dry and generally moderate except for two brief heat spikes, allowing for more than sufficient hang time. As a result, the wine has concentrated fruit and mineral aromatics with a deep, complex mid-palate and a long, well-integrated finish. After 15 to 22 days on the skins, the wine was pressed and barreled immediately. It was fined in barrel with fresh egg whites and bottled unfiltered in June 2003. Estate Blend: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot Appellation: Oakville Fermentation: Native yeast and natural malolactic Aging: 19 months in French oak; 90% new"

...Concentrated cassis-like fruit is the driving force of this big, brash, lavishly oaked and impressively filled offering, and neither tannin nor heat nor youthful coarseness diminishes its singular control. The wine is dense and downright chewy in texture, and it is framed by plenty of pushy tannin, but its ripe and keenly focused Cabernet fruit comes with high expectations despite its toughness...

The opaque purple-colored 2000 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red (1,200 cases) reveals a gorgeous perfume of melted licorice, lead pencil shavings, black currants, white flowers, and truffles. Spicy and rich, with low acidity as well as a surprisingly sexy, deep mid-palate, it is one of the finest efforts of this difficult vintage. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it is best consumed over the next 10-12 years.

The Oakville Estate Proprietary Red, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, is a powerful example reminiscent of Harlan Estate's Cabernet. There are 1,200 cases of the 2000 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red (86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot). It boasts a saturated purple color along with gorgeous aromatics of black fruits, new oak, sweet earth, truffles, asphalt, and barbecue spices. The wine possesses sweet tannin, an opulent texture, and a long, concentrated finish revealing hints of espresso and vanilla. It is a sexy Cabernet to enjoy now and over the next 12-13 years.

(the first vintage from Rudd's own vines just inside the Silverado Trail in Oakville) Full medium ruby. Pungent, superripe aromas of black raspberry, minerals and tarry oak, with a suggestion of exotic berries. Lush, concentrated and almost liqueur-like, with compelling, mouthfilling sweetness. Finishes with lush tannins and lingering sweetness. This sample made the 2000 Jericho Canyon bottling seem lean and dry by comparison. 91-94 points

(bottled in June of 2002; 86% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot) Saturated medium ruby. Aromas of currant, black cherry, smoked meat, truffle and loam. Lush and sweet, with a very suave texture and complex flavors of graphite, truffle and game. Dense, fat and ripe; a very successful cabernet-based wine from the 2000 vintage. The fine tannins arrive late, allowing the flavors to linger. The first vintage for the estate's flagship wine. 91 points

Saturated ruby to the rim. Distinctly Pomerol-like aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, bitter chocolate, tar and menthol. Lush, thick and sweet; superripe flavors of black cherry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Seems more forward than the wine from Jericho Canyon, hardly surprising in light of the very young vines here. Finishes with big, chewy tannins that are less noble than those of the Jericho Canyon blend. Boasts impressive sweetness and richness of flavor considering that these vines were in their third leaf. 91-93 points

A notable success for the vintage, Rudd's Estate offering does display slightly herbal characteristics, but amply compensates for that with plenty of lush, rich fruit. Oak-imparted toast and supple tannins frame ripe berry flavors that extend through the finish.

An intense and deeply flavorful wine with a broad range of flavors that take in coffee, currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit and turns supple and polished, finishing with a long, rich aftertaste brimming with flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2005 through 2014. 1,200 cases made. (JL)
