The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is a candidate for "wine of the vintage." It boasts a saturated black/purple color as well as a sexy, up-front nose of melted licorice intermixed with creosote, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, and graphite scents. It is layered, opulent, full-bodied, and atypically accessible for a young Bryant Cabernet, with low acidity and exceptional length. This remarkable effort will be one of the easiest to drink as well as fastest to evolve Bryants made to date. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.

...an amazing tour de force. Quality like this was rare, if not impossible to obtain in 2000...amazing aromatic concoction includes notes of melted licorice, minerals, smoky toast, and blackberry as well as cassis liqueur. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, it is a voluptuous effort...It is a brilliant achievement, surpassed by none, and equaled only by a few other northern California 2000s.

...Briary black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and menthol on the superripe nose. Initially a bit tight, but opened with aeration to show fresh, layered black fruit flavors of splendid depth...Finishes with great, broad, mouthcoating tannins and wonderful sweetness of fruit...

Bright deep ruby. Near-confectionery aromas of cassis, boysenberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and sexy oak. Hugely sweet and utterly seamless in the mouth; not yet fleshy but very dense and promising. Strong note of torrefaction from the barrels. Extraordinary finish builds slowly and inexorably. 94-97 points

Saturated medium ruby. Briary black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and menthol on the superripe nose. Initially a bit tight, but opened with aeration to show fresh, layered black fruit flavors of splendid depth. It's hard to imagine that there's a 2000 California cabernet with a more impressive middle palate. Finishes with great, broad, mouthcoating tannins and wonderful sweetness of fruit. This got better and better as it opened in the glass. 95 points

Good bright full ruby. Reticent but pure aromas of black fruits, minerals, mocha and maple syrup. Dry, bright and youthful, with a seamless texture and harmonious, very ripe acidity. Enticing flavor of crystallized black raspberry. Perhaps not as structured at the 2001, but this is quite firm for the year, finishing with substantial ripe tannins and outstanding subtle length. I'd expect the 2001 to ultimately surpass this wine, but today the 2000 has the advantage of another year of winemaker Helen Turley's elevage 93-96 points

A big, rich, extracted style, with a gutsy core of currant, pencil lead, earth and plum. Full-bodied from start to finish, with a long, detailed aftertaste, mouthcoating tannins and touches of herb, cedar and spice. Builds momentum. Drink now through 2012. 800 cases made. (JL)
