($45) Pale yellow. Aromas of pineapple, lime, toasted grain, smoke and dried nuts; turned increasingly stony and Chassagne-like with aeration. Concentrated and sweet but dry and delicate, with tightly wound flavors of lime, spice, oatmeal and earth. At once dense and lacy, with terrific verve for California chardonnay. Finishes spicy, dry and long. (These are the first releases from the joint venture between Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and Larry Hyde, using fruit from the Hyde family's vineyards.) 91 points

Almost Zinfandel-like in its spicy, peppery aromatics and flavors. Well-balanced, with creamy oak adding a nice touch, finishing with tapered tannins and good length. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. New winery from the Hyde & de Villaine families. Drink now through 2008. 700 cases made. (JL)
